This weekend was the first Sampled sale that took place on Saturday and Sunday. I was down to paint some nails and check out all the cute hip – hop boys that were there to pick up a bargain (or 10). Damn was it a fun weekend, amazing tunes, incredible brands at a fraction of the price and I got to paint some gorgeous girls’ nails. As I was busy, I didn’t manage to take photos, so I stole a load from the AnyForty & Sampled blogs (sorry guys!). Peep the Sampled website and start getting excited about the next one, and check out some of the nails I did here.

A Dyslexic Girl’s Guide to Books: Tart Cards

Hello. My name is Hells and I’m dyslexic…

but damn do I love a good book!

In my last year at art school I began making my own Tart Cards. For anyone who doesn’t know what a Tart Card is, it’s a small, post-card-sized piece of paper that prostitutes put in telephone boxes to advertise their services. Before you go there, no I was not making tart cards to advertise my career change to becoming a hooker. I made cards that, instead of advertising girl’s sexual “talents” they advertised their intellect and expertise in whatever field they worked in.

Peep my cards below:

So, obviously while doing this project I came to learn a lot about the origins of Tart Cards in London (because yes, they are unique to LDN). It wasn’t until a month after said project was finished that I came across the most perfect book on the subject: “Tart Cards: London’s Illicit Advertising Art” by Caroline Archer & Mark Batty.

I know right? Sod’s law that I scrawl the internet, books and documents to try to get as much info on TCs and just when I don’t need it no more, I find this gem in the book shop opposite my office!

Regardless, I got the book. Firstly because it was only £6, and secondly because I have a true, deep love of Tart Cards, and this book has everything you will ever want to know about them. Plus, a lot of information about the dark underworld of the London sex-scene; it’s history, origins, techniques, doggy dealings, the lot!
The good thing about this book is it is stuffed full of images. Now, for a dyslexic, this is like giving a fat kid the golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s factory. There is nothing better for me than a book that has more pictures that words, and the words it does have are easy to follow, interesting, and informative.
To top it all off, once you’ve learnt all about Tart Cards, and seen pretty much every card that’s ever been made, there is a handy little glossary at the back of the book that teaches you the meanings of technical terms and vernacular phrases that are commonly found on London’s tart cards.
What could be better for a dyslexic than a dictionary huh?

Super-Heroines Wear Nike

I get very bored of lookbooks, it’s very rare that I find a lookbook that actually inspires me and makes me want to buy the clothes. One think I never get bored of however, are comics (yes, I know I’m a geek! I own it!). So the lookbook for Nike’s Autumn 2011 collection really took my breath away. The lookbook is a collaboration between Nike and two female comic book artists; Jan Duursema & Amanda Connor entitled “Make Yourself a Superhero.” Which is meant to take the focus off of the celebrity athlete and put it on the every day woman.

Sherman advertises MAC

Cindy Sherman is known for dressing up as different characters in her photography, so It kinda makes sense that she has helped MAC make-up to with their Fall 2011 range. This collection was originally named MAC for Cindy Sherman but has been officially renamed to MAC Fall Colour.

A Dyslexic Girl’s Guide to Books: How to spot a Bastard by his Star Sign

Hello. My name is Hells and I’m dyslexic.

It took me years to learn to read (when I say years, I mean, I’m still bloody learning!), but I love books.

This can be a bit of a problem for a dyslexic, because although I want to read any book I come across, I can’t get through the first chapter without putting it down and waiting for the film version to be released. However, I really am a massive fan of books, but the only ones I do manage to finish have to be funny, particularly interesting, teach me something, get me thinking, ect.

So, I have decided to share my recomedations of books that are super friendly for anyone who doesn’t have much time, patience or brain cells for most written texts.

The first book I’ll share with you is “How to spot a Bastard by his Star Sign by Adele Lang & Susi Rajah.

Front:
Back:
This book was sent to me by the amazing Susan, after I told her I was dumped by a Libra Bastard. Said event happened less than two weeks ago, I received the book last week, and I’ve already finished it!

Now, for someone who takes a year to read a chapter, this amazed me, a whole book in a week?! It was down to the fact that this book is the best thing I’ve read in a while. It’s funny (like really funny. Laugh-out-loud-on-the-bus-funny.), the chapters are only a few pages each, and everything these girls say is uncanny!! They hit the nail (and by nail I mean man) on the head every time!!

Read the intro to the book, and already from this you get that the girls aren’t taking themsleves (or men) to seriously:

The book has a chapter for each star sign, and a great quiz at the back to help you identify which star sign your special Bastard is.

I like reading my Star Signs, but must say, I have always taken them with a pinch of salt. So I read this book with the same attitude… that is until I came to the Libra Bastard chapter. As I said before, a Libra just broke my heart, so I was interested to read his chapter. And, my god, I can not stress how accurate this is, in everyway! So much so, that one of these girls must have met my particular Libra, maybe they are part of the long list of girls he’s shagged? Maybe one of them is his sister? Or his Mum? Because no one can be that accurate in one little book?!

Or maybe there really is something to these Star Signs….

Sign Language Barbie

I had Becky, Barbie’s disabled friend who came with a cute pink wheelchair, and I loved her. However, I didn’t know about Barbie the sign language teacher! I totally would have got this doll and loved her. What a brilliant idea!

Sign Language Barbie was developed in partnership with the National Center of Deafness at California State University to ensure the doll instructed sign language accurately and was not offensive to deaf people or those hard of hearing. “Equipped with more than 20 sign pictures, Sign Language Barbie teaches children to sign simple words, such as dog, cat, boy and girl,” says Mary Zanette, Director of Marketing at Toys “R” Us Canada. “But, the doll does more than instruct an introductory level of sign language communication, it also enables children, who are not challenged by deafness, to communicate and thus befriend children they might not otherwise have had the opportunity to interact with.”

The Phraseology Project

“The idea is simple — You submit a letter, word or phrase and we’ll make it look beautiful with type.”

I love type websites like this one, especially when you can buy prints of the type online. The idea was made-up by Drew Melton, in his own words he says:

“In addition to wanting to create work based on community submissions Drew wanted a framework to explore typography further. Up to this point the designs are purely typographic — sometimes diving into a mix of illustration and type.”
